The Crossbreed Wheel, as the innovation is known, is a folding full-sized wheel that the RCA has chosen as a Selected Work for commercial development.
It was originally designed for use on bicycles but is now being considered for use on wheelchairs.
Its versatility would enable the wheels to taken off a wheelchair and folded, leaving the wheelchair itself to be folded into a smaller package for easier transport and storage – for example during car and plane journeys or in the home. The wheels can later be popped back onto the wheelchair in two simple steps without the need for re-inflation.
The Mobility Roadshow, which is organised by Department of Transport charity Mobility Choice, was the ideal venue to showcase such a device.
The innovation attracted a lot of interest and the designer was able to discuss his invention with manufacturers and meet a wide range of wheelchair users, young and old.
Following the Mobility Roadshow event, the wheel was also shown to manufacturers and the public at the REHA care conference in Düsseldorf in October.
The Crossbreed Wheel is a patent-pending College Selected Work. The RCA is actively seeking licensees for the innovation.
