Prototype of Siddle with the designer demonstrating how to use it

New Selected Works

The InnovationRCA Selected Works panel is the College’s very own Dragon’s Den, comprising experts in design, business, manufacturing and intellectual property.

The panel reviewed 45 applications from RCA students and alumni, ranging from plumbing solutions for the developing world to typing aids for older people.

Two of the Selected Works are projects developed by RCA Industrial Design Engineering graduate Rombout Frieling, who was awarded the James Dyson Innovation Fellowship 2009 to commercially advance his projects.

Siddle is a dynamic seat that lies flush with a wall until it folds out under the weight of the sitter – it can be used in sports stadia or as street furniture; Flupper is an early-stage development of an alternative elevator – a manually powered vertical ascender that would allow users to move vertically between floors using only 20 per cent of the energy they would consume if they used the stairs.

The third Selected Work was developed by Maria Ganszyniec of RCA Design Products: a range of bath and sink plugs designed to be easier to use by older, arthritic or visually impaired users.

The College’s Selected Work portfolio includes innovations related to Architecture and the Environment, Health and Medical, and Home and Leisure.
